Chapter Philanthropy and Service
The Gamma Phi chapter takes great pride in the service and philanthropy work we do each semester. Twice a year we hold a Think Pink Week on UNT's campus to get everyone involved and raise awareness for breast cancer. Our members table in the library mall and pass out ribbons, shower cards, and collect donations. Think Pink Week also includes exciting activities such as lip sync competitions, carnival competitions at our Carnival for a Cure, a Pink Out UNT football game in the fall as well as a Pink Out UNT hockey game in the spring! For the fall 2015 Pink Out football game, our chapter was excited to be a part of UNT's first ever "human ribbon" on the football field at half time where we helped create a giant breast cancer ribbon with our pink shirts on the field for everyone to see! Every year, our Think Pink chair comes up with bigger and better ideas to help our chapter members raise awareness.
In addition to Think Pink Week, our chapter hosts an annual golf tournament every spring. 2015 was our 22nd annual golf tournament where we raised $15,000 through team signs ups, a silent auction, business sponsorships, and donations for breast cancer education and awareness. It is an event our members look forward to every year!
One very special project our chapter was able to take part in was the Eureka Park 2 project during fall 2015. Instead of using money for homecoming floats that get thrown away after the parade, the Gamma Phi chapter and our homecoming partners voted to donate it to the Eureka Park 2 project. This which project involved rebuilding one of the most loved playgrounds in the area that was no longer safe after 20 years of wear and tear. The reconstruction used recycled materials to create a durable, earth friendly, and long lasting place for children in our community to enjoy for many years to come. Together with our homecoming partners, we raised over $4,600 and 600 hours of service to help build the park!
Throughout the year, our members also enjoy getting together to complete smaller projects such as taking baked goods to the firefighters in Denton, making cards and key chains to take to the local nursing home, or writing letters and creating care packages for the men and women over seas. The Gamma Phi chapter loves volunteering in the Denton community and is always excited for annual events such as The Big Event, Greeks Give, and philanthropy events held by other organizations at UNT. During 2015, our members were proud to have completed over 2,800 service hours!
The Gamma Phi chapter is excited for the year to come as we hope to raise even more money and awareness for breast cancer.
